Frank Loesser's
Guys and Dolls
20th to 23rd October 2010
The show is set in Times Square, New York where Nathan Detroit is trying to find a suitable location for a floating crap game, whilst trying to fend off the marriage plans of his fiancée of 14 years – Miss Adelaide. Then there’s the big-time gambler, Sky Masterson – what won’t he bet on? How about that he’ll succeed in getting the prim Sarah Brown, leading light in the Save a Soul Mission, to come with him to Cuba?
Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and based on Damon Runyon’s short story “The Idyll Of Miss Sarah Brown”, the show opened in November 1950, and won five Tony awards, including Best Musical. The 1955 film version starred Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons. The show was successfully revived at The National Theatre in 1982 with Bob Hoskins and Julia McKenzie among the all-star cast. Most recently a production at The Piccadilly Theatre saw a succession of Hollywood stars tread the boards including Ewan McGregor and the late Patrick Swayze.
Loesser’s score, one of the finest ever written for Broadway, spans intimate romance through streetwise New York ditties to rollicking gospel and includes such memorable songs as “Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat”,” Luck be a Lady Tonight”, Adelaide’s Lament” and “A Bushel And A Peck”.
